Apex Legends: Caustic, the Toxic Trapper

We go over the Legend Caustic, covering his abilities and playstyle, in this guide!

Seen by many as a low ranked legend or a non-primary choice, Caustic is considered more of a solo character as his gas abilities still cause damage to teammates. While it takes some practice to get a hang of the optimal usage of his abilities, his gas traps are great to trap in enemies and blind opponent vision. Like any other battle royale game with a focus on teamwork to succeed, using Caustic's gas traps can effectively help teammates force opponents toward a specific area before going in for the kill.

Caustic is one of the Legends that doesn't come default unlocked and requires you to either spend Apex Coins or using game-earned Legend Tokens. This character will cost you 850 Apex Coins, where $10 gets you 1,000 Coins, or 12,000 Legend Tokens instead.

Abilities:

Passive: NOX VISION

Caustic's first ability is his passive, Nox Vision. Caustic can see through the gas traps he can deploy, whereas opponents are blinded by the colored smoke. He is described, however, as a more "solo" legend as the Nox Gas will still hinder teammates and opponents alike.

Specifically in enclosed environments, the Nox Gas can deal damage over time as well as hinder visibility, which will allow Caustic players to easily find opponents, who are highlighted in a green outline, and ambush unsuspecting players.

Tactical: NOX GAS TRAP

Caustic's second ability is his tactical, Nox Gas Trap, which is great to set up ambushes or force enemies toward a certain direction. These canisters also release Nox Gas that damages over time, which restricts movement and also alerts Caustic players to enemy locations when the traps are triggered.

These can also be used to defend yourself from approaching enemies, as a blockade, similar to the usage of an incendiary grenade. Canisters will show a grey outline when inactive, and a green outline when active. They can also be picked up after placement.

Ultimate: NOX GAS GRENADE

Caustic's last ability is his ultimate, Nox Gas Grenade. This blankets a large area with the deadly Nox gas, which is useful in buildings with small interiors or when enemies are collected together, due to the ring closing. With the time counting down and bullets flying left and right, the last thing a player wants is to suffer from unneeded Nox Gas damage, which makes this ultimate great to repel enemies from an area.

Playstyle and Tips:

Caustic is a great character to put pressure on opponents, where he plays a supporter role, but many would describe him as a difficult legend to play with because of his abilities that also affect teammates.

By blocking doors and building hallways with your Nox Gas Traps, you can slowly damage downed enemies to prevent a revive, deploy them behind your team to eliminate ambushes, and also utilize the enemy outlining feature with his passive to locate confused and disoriented opponents. Additionally, using the Nox Gas to hide yourself when you are downed is a great way to discourage opponents from finding your location and entering the area around you.

One commonly seen strategy using Caustic's gas traps and gas grenades consist of using these abilities inside a confined room, whether using items as bait or by forcing enemies into the room and then blockading the door. These traps also work well in certain drop locations which consist of many confined buildings or a small area, such as the Loot Barge, where the gas traps can be utilized to deter enemies.

Conclusion:

Caustic is definitely an unpopular character, which many would place close to last, as his toxic gas throwing ability is almost useless toward the end of a match when compared with other legends. The gas doesn't cause much damage unless stacked and players can easily run out of it, but there's a possibility that he could be improved if his gas did more damage or a slower character had more usage.
