Interview with DIG ShurimaWizard on Season 2: Legendary Hunt

We spoke with ShurimaWizard about Season 2 of Apex Legends, covering Wattson, the new ranked mode, and more...

Season 2: Legendary Hunt has been out for a while now, giving us enough time to take in all of the new content and features. This update that came with the 2nd Apex Legends season is the largest and most comprehensive update yet. That's why we sat down with Nhan "ShurimaWizard" Le, one of the professional DIGApex players, to ask him about his thoughts on the new season as a whole. We covered the new legend Wattson, alternations to the map, and more.

Hey ShurimaWizard, what have you been up to the past couple of weeks in Apex?

ShurimaWizard: So we've been playing a lot for the FACEIT Pro League and the new season just came out. The new ranked mode also came out, we're currently competing at Diamond level but rapidly approaching Predator. Wattson is amazing at ranking, even when we're playing against high-level opponents!

What were your first impressions after seeing the new Legend, Wattson?

ShurimaWizard: I thought she wouldn't be useful. Wattson surprised me on how effective she is at what she does in ranked, even though I still think she doesn't excel in normal pubs. We'll have to see how the meta evolves.

Do you think that the new ranked queue is superior to the Elite Queue we’ve seen before the release of Season 2?

ShurimaWizard: Yeah, definitely. It's probably the best ranking system out of any BR and will only improve from here on out. The game's pace is definitely quicker compared to normal pubs.

I don't really care about any rewards, but I would like for them to add more rewards to keep players motivation up.

What do you think of King’s Canyon in its current state?

ShurimaWizard: I like the idea of an evolving map, it feels like a breath of fresh air. I do like every single change they made to the map up to now.

Would you prefer multiple maps similar to PUBG, or a singular map that gets changed every season as Fortnite does?

ShurimaWizard: Personally, I prefer the way Fortnite does it. It'll be easier for players to learn a single map instead of three or four maps, automatically making any player more knowledgeable about King's Canyon. Multiple maps are also fine, I just think that an ever-changing map keeps the game from becoming stale.

What are your thoughts on the recently added L-Star?

ShurimaWizard: The L-Star is too hard to use. I don't like it because of the Overheat feature that it has. When you try to fire 40 bullets but in practice, you actually shoot 10 due to overheating. The traces of bullets look like lasers, making it very hard to see where the rounds are actually going. I do think it's a very effective weapon at close range though.

The Alternator was one of the least used weapons in the game. What do you think about the weapon after the recent buffs?

ShurimaWizard: It feels imbalanced at the moment. You can kill other players way too fast, their shield practically just melts away. We'll see how they'll try to fix it in an upcoming patch.

Weapons that use Energy ammunition were considered top-tier by many already, do you think that the new Energy magazines will cause the game to become unbalanced?

ShurimaWizard: I don't think so. Every weapon is very good at the moment, they each have their use in the game now. If all weapons are good, I think the game's balance is good as well.

Which balancing changes, in your opinion, will impact the competitive scene the most?

ShurimaWizard: I think the weapon changes and Legend changes are definitely the worst. Gibraltar and Caustic are very hard to 1v1 right now, but we're always able to adjust to the new balancing changes up to now. Bloodhound and Mirage need a rework or a buff, I don't think they're useful at all right now.

What do you think about the synergy between Wattson and Caustic?

ShurimaWizard: If both of them hold a building, I don't think there's any way for someone to get in! It's very dependent on luck though. If there's no building in the 2nd to the last zone or even earlier, it'll be impossible to fight a normal aggressive composition in an open field. I don't think it's a very great composition at this time.

Any shoutouts to finish off this interview?

ShurimaWizard: Shoutout to Apex Legends, they made the game very fun again! Ranking and new content will keep us busy for a long while and I hope they can continue this trend.

We want to thank ShurimaWizard for taking his time answering our questions in the midst of their ranked grind. We're excited to see where Apex Legends is going in the next few months and the possible new tournaments that are on the horizon. We wish ShurimaWizard and the rest of the #DIGApex squad the best of luck for the FACEIT Pro League.
